Limited internet access

Will update as much as I can.

Cheers, mate.

P. Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney

There's nothing like the comforts of home in a foreign country.
After checking in to the hotel the Madeline, Liana, and I grabbed some coffee from Starbucks, and hit the city. We rode the monorail and had the chance to see the city much like how we saw Melbourne. It was nice to be off of our feet for a while. I feel like we haven’t stopped walking since I’ve arrived in Australia. Don’t get me wrong I love the exercise, but my feet are beginning to reject all this walking.

So it couldn’t have been a better day for us to climb the bridge, as in the Sydney Harbor Bridge. The girls and I were scheduled to climb at 4:15, so we had a lot of time to kill. Liana showed us around Sydney, and we actually got the chance to visit the Sydney Opera House. I couldn’t believe that there were actually multiple buildings; that’s right, they aren’t all connected. We also bummed around the harbor for a bit and checked out some local cruise ships. We tired to think of a full proof plan to sneak on the ships, but sadly we failed.

If you put all the buildings of the Sydney Opera House together
they form a perfect circle.
I guess it was for the best, because we found a great café. They had amazing sandwiches, though we all wished we had ordered wheat bread. Still the food was great, and we were in a great spot to people watch. We spent a good hour at least just watching people pass us. After that we wandered around the city some more looking for jewelry shops where Madeline could find a pearl ring; apparently Australia is known for their pearls.  Our search ended in defeat, but it was finally time to make our way to the bridge climb.

We weren’t far from the bridge, which was a relief; I think all of us were beginning to get tired. But the girls and I were ready to climb the bridge. Well, kind of.  When we first got there we had to check in, and the guy helping me couldn’t find my reservation. As if I wasn’t freaked out enough about climbing the damn bridge, now I had to worry that I booked it at the wrong time/day. Thankfully, he found my reservation. All we had to do was wait now until it was our turn to climb.

Liana, Madeline, and I waiting to climb the bridge.
It wasn’t too bad; we only had to wait like 30 minutes. They also had this great video that would show us what to do. If you missed it the first time it ran on a seven-minute loop. (That was sarcasm for you who don’t understand Australian humor.) The video was awful, but I was too nervous/excited to climb the bridge I didn’t really notice.

It actually took them longer to train us for the climb than we had to wait. They take us through everything slowly so that nothing goes wrong. I didn’t mind it. If anything I think it helped to calm my nerves. First we had to sign some forms.
One of the few smiles I could force while walking on the bridge.
Then it was time for the suits. They were surprisingly comfortable, but add that with all the supplies we had to walk with... Let’s just say that it was pretty heavy. After you have the harness on they strap everything to you. Sunglass, hats, jackets, everything needs to be securely attached to you, so that it doesn’t come off and cause car accidents down below. After climbing the bridge I can understand why; it was super windy up there.

But that wasn’t what was bothering my the most.

To get on to the actual bridge you have to walk on this creepy walkway, and climb ladders to have cars zooming past you at 100 km/hour. It didn’t help that you could see directly below you. Now, I am terrified of heights, and so is Liana. You can imagine how this went. But seriously, I think both of us did a good job getting past that area.

The girls and me striking a pose on top of the Sydney Harbor Bridge.
Once we got on to the bridge I was amazed by the view. I completely forgot how high up I was. The walk wasn’t bad. We stopped four times to take pictures. However, my feet still hurt. After our climb we took a taxi back to the hotel.

It was already late and we were famished. The girls and I met up with Liana’s friends Emma and Erin. We went to China Town for dinner. We all decided that Nine Dragons would be a great place to eat. They had a cheap dinner deal that came with a lot of food. Well, thankfully it was a cheap place, because the service was awful. We got three napkins to share, our food came before our drinks, and the waiters ignored our requests. Thankfully tipping isn't required in Australia.

After a day like that the three of us were exhausted. We watched two and episodes of Summer Heights High before we crashed.

Cheers, mate.

Sovereign Hill

Sovereign Hill is a place trapped in time. It dates back to the 1850's, and let me tell you the 'hill' is no joke. It's more like a mountain paved out of tiny rocks. Walking was a bit of a challenge, but it was so worth it. Liana's dad Rodi took us girls, and the four of us made our way through time. It was quite entertaining. We saw the school, and a bunch of other places.

We even watched gold get remolded, and we took a ride down into a restored mine. The ride down was so relaxing. It was pitch black; you couldn't see you own hand if it was two inches in front of your face. We also had a chance to pin for gold. If this excursion taught me anything it's that I could never be a miner, or live in the 1800's. It was hot and there was no air conditioning. Don't even get me started on the tiny 'houses' they used to live in.

The day took a lot out of me. I actually fell asleep on the car ride home. We then bummed around for a bit, and actually ended up watching Sex and the City. Liana's mom has the whole set. We didn't even make it through season one, before I passed out.

Cheers, mate.

P.S. I also had fish and chips for dinner. Well technically it was shark and fries, but hey it was delicious.

Zoo time

I can't remember the last time I went to the zoo. I'm not even 100% sure that I have ever been to a real one. Let me just say I love the zoo. The animals are so cute, and even though they smell I can't think of anything better than seeing a tiger up close. The zoo was full of interesting animals like otters, lions, bears, giraffes, and anything else you can possibly imagine. However, my favorite was the penguins; not only are they my favorite animal, but they are so small and cute. I cannot wait until we get to see them on Phillip Island. I might die, or maybe just try to steal one instead. Watch out little guys, I'm coming for you.

While the zoo was awesome, all that walking had really tired me out. I hadn't showered in 24 hours and with the sun as an added factor I think I smelled worse than the animals, and that's saying something. Well after a well needed shower, the girls and I got ready to out to the city for some dinner. We went to Lygon Street in Melbourne; it is the Italian section of the city. You would think I would feel right at home, but the people outside the restaurants were so obnoxious. They would try to convince you to eat at their place and talk your ear off. I don't where I want to eat, but if you're going to annoy me chances are I won't be going where you work. That being said as annoying as they are one guy offered us 20% off the bill, and we got free garlic bread. (Yeah, I was surprised also that you didn't automatically get it for free.)

Well, the dinner was delicious. Liana and I split a bottle of red wine for dinner, and I also had pasta with avocado in it. It was one of the better Italian restaurant meals I've had. My mouth still waters just thinking about it. Emma, Madeline, Liana, and I didn't want to end our night after dinner, so we said goodbye to Erin and Catherine who headed back to Moonee Creek. The fearsome foursome headed out for an adventure, and that's what we found. We spent a good 20 minutes looking for the Rooftop Bar. We found it, but only after walking in just about every other direction. Maddie's feet were not happy about that.

The walk was worth it. We ended up finding the bar, and Liana and I hit up the bar immediately for some beer. I don't remember the name, but it was Italian. (I'm sensing a theme for my night.) It wasn't bad, but I just am not the biggest beer fan. I moved on to spirits for my next few drinks. Again, I tried to find myself a man, but that failed. I talked to Liana's friend Liam about Australian boys and he informed me about how Aussie men prefer to be picked up. I needed to have the balls to to go up and start the conversation. Well he thought it would be a good idea to try to pick up the bartender. It wasn't I failed miserably, and made myself look so stupid. I cringe at the thought of it. I had a few guys actually approach, but I have zero game. You could say I have the swagger of a cripple.

Emma drove us home at 2:30, and I was more than ready to go to bed. I had barely gotten my contacts out before my head hit the pillow.

Cheers, mate.

Boxing day

I've never understood the allure of Black Friday shopping. Then again, I have never been an actual shopper. I was on the working side; and I hated it. Today, however I changed roles and joined the masses of people on the hunt for a great deal. It seemed to be fun at first, but than I heard the dreaded beeping of the sensor machines and the roar of the crowd. It brought back all the horrible memories my working days. Days I dread returning to.

I did, however, find some great deals and got a few things. I don't think they were worth all the pushing, shoving, and rude people crowding the mall. I can't described how relieved I was to finally make it back to Liana's and crash on the couch.

The day wasn't over though. Maddie, Liana, Aidan, Jordan, and I had another adventure we had to go on. We took a walk on the wild side in search for some kangaroos, and we found them alright. There were at least 30 of them in their mob. (That's what a group of kangaroos is called; a mob. I'm not kidding). It was really cool to see them. Some of them were even boxing each other. Aside from the roos we saw heaps of butterflies and other bugs, but that was about it.

After every adventure the explorers need a victory meal. That's exactly what we had. Emma's house wasn't far away, so we went there for dessert. She had left over chocolate cake from Christmas. We ate outside, and let me just say her house has a beautiful spacious set up. The layout confused me a bit though. It wasn't anything like the architecture we have in the states. We sat and talked for a bit with Emma when Erin arrived. Out of all the Aussie she has my favorite accent; just the way she talks seems so different. She's also hysterical. She went swimming with her phone and broke it; maybe she needs to tell the story so it's actually funny.

Well, as the sun began to set it started to get colder so we went inside. It was then someone suggested going to see the Christmas lights around the neighborhood. I must say they were nothing like I had expected. The majority of them were just like the ones back home, but then we would see houses that put the normal houses to shame. These houses were not only covered with Christmas lights, but they had window displays you could go up to look at. One house had things move when you clapped. It was unreal.

At this point it was pretty late, and I was ready for bed. So we headed back to the house, and I pretty much jumped into bed. It's kind of sad because John came over last night. (He's the boy their family is jokingly trying to set me up with.) Oh rats. Next time.

Cheers, mate.

Merry (white) Christmas from Down Under

Christmas morning with Liana's family.
If you know me, then you must know that I am not the biggest fan of Christmas. The commercialism makes my skin crawl, and the added stress to impressing family members with elaborate gift is too much for me to bare. Most people would be upset to find out that they would be spending the holidays away from their family. I was actually excited to by-pass the drama this year. Don't get me wrong. I adore my family, but I can't take everything that comes with the holidays.

Here's a thought why don't we just go on vacations for the holidays.

No presents. No drama. Just me, my family, the beach, and I can pretty much guarantee a white Christmas. That's right, even in Australia I can't escape the weather. It wasn't snow, but the citizens of Melbourne did get heaps of hail. The downpour lasted for at least 10 minutes; even buddy came inside for shelter. It definitely was an adventure. It was pretty entertaining to see all the Aussies freak out over the hail. Apparently they haven't had a hail like that in more than 10 years. Then Brad pointed out that insurance doesn't cover hail damage. Sorry guys.

It is unfortunate for all the people who came. Let's see if I can get this right. There was Liana, Maddie, Diane, Brad, Georgia, Liam, Aidan, Grandma, Grandpa, Matt, Daniel, Mauve, Karen, Lilly, Sam, and I know I'm missing a few other aunts and uncles, I just can't think of their names. It definitely was a big family Christmas. We all sat down for lunch, which might I say was delicious, and before we ate we opened up these bon-bon christmas firecracker things. They were pretty cool. Each one comes with a bad joke, a crown that you wear, and a other little surprise like a puzzle or measuring tape. I don't know what the crowns symbolize in the pack, but I like to think it's meant to make one feel like royalty. After all, we did feast like kings. I think I'm still full from yesterday.

Christmas bon-bons, the prize is inside.
We all had a huge lunch at the Keighran-Neri house. I would compare it to the Christmas dinner my family eats every year, only with more vegetarian options. There was so much food that I had to try a little bit of everything. Okay, maybe a lot of everything. I restrained myself from grabbing seconds, but dessert killed me. There was a mouth-watering tiramisu, and some other mango dessert from Brazil. Everything was just amazing. I debated finding a nice quiet place where I could give in to my food coma, but I couldn't bring myself to get up. I'm sure I dozed off a few times, but can you really blame a girl?

I wasn't prepared at all for what would happen next. Liana, Madeline, Liam, Aidan, and I would all go over to Liana's dad's house for another feast, of the dinner kind. Rodi made an amazing vegetarian lasagna with pumpkin. I swear I can still taste it. But that wasn't the only thing there. In fact, I would venture to say there was probably just as much food for half the amount of people. His mother kept trying to feed me all night; little did she know my stomach was about to burst if I ate anything else.

We then went into the family room and curled up on the couch for some R&R and to watch the Christmas classic National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. It's official, I can quote the whole movie in my head. It was a great way to feel at home in a foreign country. The long day finally ended when Liana's mother picked us us to bring us back to bed. I'm going to be honest, I don't remember falling asleep. That's how tired/full I was.

Cheers, mate.

Merry Christmas Eve

My beach bums and I left paradise and returned back to Liana's home. It felt great to come back after a day full of shopping and driving. We might have left Torque, but I will always have a reminder of the beach with me, well in my jewelry box anyway. In the mist of all the beach shops I found a beautiful turquoise bracelet, and I'm proud to say it was a steal. We actually did quite of bit of window shopping, and me and Madeline both found something.

We all found something at Mackers to eat, even though it got the better of all three of us. It was nice not to worry about dinner. The only thing standing in the way between me and Diane's delicious meal was Christmas mass.

Madeline and I joined Liana's family at a local Catholic church. It was surprisingly similar to the services we have back in the states, however some of the words in the prayers were different. There was also the fact that we were all sweating in the heat. That certainly doesn't happen in Chicago.

After sweating like a 'sinner in church' it felt great to come back to the house and have dinner waiting for us. I tried lentil patties, which were delicious by the way. There was also a yummy salad, and fish. I forget what the fish was called, but I would compare it to tilapia.

Then we all sat down to watch Carols by Candlelight. It's an Australian Christmas special. The crowd actually lights candles. It's pretty cool to see. I can't wait for Christmas to come tomorrow. Well, I'm expecting Santa to come any minute now.

Cheers, mate.

Life's a beach part two

Madeline, Liana, and I ventured out yet again to the beach. Only this time we went to Lorne (pronounced like Lauren). The weather was beautiful; hot with a slight breeze. It was nothing like Ocean Grove, as far as wind goes. It was so hot on the beach that we all went deep into the water to cool down.

We spent time hopping with the waves. We even talked to some locals about shark attacks. They assured us they rarely happen, but then proceed to tell us how the sharks tend to hang out by the pier. The pier was definitely a ways away, but still. We were technically swimming in ‘shark infested waters’ according to Maddie.

Other than that it was a typical day at the beach. It was a scenic two-hour ride to the beach that included seeing cliffs and other parts of the Australian landscape. We also saw the local beach houses, which I must say they looked really cool. There was a house that was held up by a single pole; I’m talking two stories above the ground. I wish I had taken a picture of it.

I did however have a chance to take pictures of the rocks that we climbed. They were covered in muscles. It was definitely an experience. We also came across a crab in the water, along with several small fish. We saw quite of bit of water life. It felt great to explore and switch thing up from lying around all day trying to soak up the sun.

We ended our beach excursion with yummy ice cream from Stone Cold. It was surprisingly similar to Cold Stone, only with different ice cream flavors and candies. I got cookie dough, which was also called Oreo cookie, but all that was really in it was chocolate chips. Regardless of what was actually in the ice cream, it was delicious. The sweet treat held us over until dinner, which Liana’s mom prepared for us to take.

It was a spicy vegetable sauce with bowtie noodles. It reminded me of vegetarian chili. I ate myself into a food coma. Thankfully we’re sitting down to watch Christmas movie, but I can’t help but think I’m going to fall asleep mid-movie as a result of my binge eating. It was just too good; I couldn’t help myself.

Well the movie is beginning.

Cheers, mate.

Life's a beach

I’m just playing in the sand. Liana, Madeline, and I ventured to Ocean Grove. It is a beach similar to any other; although I noticed that it was much windier than any beach I’ve been to. Both Maddie and Liana enjoyed the breeze, but I would’ve preferred it to be hotter than hot.

Then again, I was the one who spent the most time in the water. Speaking of which, it was pretty cold. It was nowhere near as warm as the Gulf of Mexico. (That was the last beach I was at.) But it was still refreshing.

It was your typical day at the beach. Both my beach buddies got sunburned even though they used sunscreen; and Madeline and I both experienced ‘beach flirting’. There were heaps of hot guys on the beach, and they all seemed to have some type of ball with them. Apparently beach flirting is hitting girls with their balls. I was not too pleased. I doubt anyone would appreciate being woken up by a soccer ball to the leg. I guess I should be happy it wasn’t a football to the head.

That’s right I said football. They have them here, but they don’t throw them with their hands. They kick them to each other with their feet. It looks so bizarre. I wanted to go over there and tell them they were doing it wrong, but I refrained. I don’t want to be that crazy American.

Instead I made a turtle in the sand. His name was Crush. I say was because Liana killed him. It was a very sad day. Still we went around drawing things in the sand and taking loads of pictures. We even did the touristy thing and asked locals to take our picture. (The thought of which made Liana cringe.)

After a few hours at the beach we were all starved, and decided to go to the super market to buy some food. We picked up some yummy things, but we should’ve picked up aloe and cold medicine. Not only are Maddie and Liana burned, but also Maddie is sick. She keeps getting progressively worse, and I’m freaking out I’ll get sick. (Knock on wood.) Thankfully I haven’t had anything too horrible happen to me. (Well, besides having Sasquatch dig her heel into my toe at the club. It still hurts. There’s that and a weird calve cramp I’ve had for the last two days, but I’ll take that over sunburn and a cold any day.)

After picking up food we went back to the beach house where Liana made us tea and heated up the pasta her mom made for us. Both were delicious. Australia is really making me want a teakettle; I’ve been drinking tea everyday since I got here. While we waited for dinner to be ready we all showered and watched TV. We watched That 70’s Show, Friends, and Zoo, which follows the life of animals in the zoo. The red pandas were my favorite.

After dinner we all sat down to watch The Roommate, which if you haven’t seen it don’t the plot line is horrible. But it was entertaining, because Liana kept saying how alike Madeline and the psycho roommate were. Honestly, I can see Maddie losing it and killing people.

We’re going to Torque beach today, which is one of Liana’s favorites. I can’t wait, but I’m not so sure how my friends are feeling. They’re going to need loads of sunscreen and heaps of water.

Cheers, mate.

P.S. Chemist = Pharmacy/Pharmacist
Power point = outlet

Club life

Madeline and I met all of Liana’s friends last night. We all went out to the club, which is not called Déjà vu, it’s called Deluxe. I like Deluxe much better. It sounds classier, and class was the theme of last night. Liana’s two friends Emma and Erin joined us and her two brothers, Liam and Aidan, and their friend Jordan in the cab. Let’s just say the cab pictures are funny.

The club had a drink special no drinks or shots over $5. I mean I guess that’s really good for being here. It didn’t really matter for me though; I didn’t buy drinks I just mooched off of her friends. Some of them even bought me drinks. They are so sweet down under.

Well, the girls are anyway. Guys suck. Well, club life is hard. The only guy I danced with last night was about my height. I know I’m going to sound like a bitch after I reveal how I handled the situation, but I’m on vacation. I’ll do what I want.

He was not what I wanted.

I tried to politely walk away, but then his friend came up to me and was all ‘my friend wants to dance with you.’ Well, I wasn’t having any of that. They say not to shoot the messenger; well the messenger typically isn’t asking you to dance with his short friend. (Confidence is key boys; if you want to dance with me, ask me yourself. Don’t send your friend, if you actually ask me yourself I might throw you a bone.) Well I bluntly told him I don’t dance with short guys. I had ‘been there done that and never going back.’

Let’s just say I don’t have a good record with short guys. I mean I don’t really have a good track record with any guy, but I especially hate short guys. Well, hopefully I’ll have better luck next time.

Even though the guys in the club didn’t find my American accent sexy and alluring the bouncer did. He was Middle Eastern though. We talked politics while we were waiting for a cab. You know just a normal night at the club. We ended up going back to the dance floor to help out one of Liana’s friends. Not everyone can keep up with the yanks.

Joke.

All things considered I think everyone had a great time. I know I did. Liana’s friends are some of the sweetest girls ever. I’m sad they didn’t come to the beach house with us, but that just means more time with my two favorite people. We’re off to the beach now, which as I explained doesn’t have wifi.

No phone. No Internet. It’s like I’m living in the Stone Age. And I love it. I have never been so relaxed. I know that’s the point of vacationing, but this is living the life. I never want to leave. I’m not ready to think about that yet. Though I will say I cannot afford Australia. Everything is double our price; then there is the conversion rate.

But if I were given the choice between America and Australia, there would be no contest. It doesn’t snow here, and everyone is so relaxed. The fashion is also amazing. It’s like people dress to impress everyday. I’ve seen so many beautiful people in suits. (And Pete, I know you’re wondering this: Yes, there are fat people in Australia. There aren’t as many as America, but they exist.)

The only thing that is keeping me coming back to America is my family and friends. So come on guys, let’s make the move. Trust me, it’s worth it.

Cheers, mate.

City girls

Melbourne is such an interesting city. They have a free tram that will take you in a whole loop around the city. It was perfect we saw all the major landmarks such as the Parliament building and St. Paul’s cathedral. We also went by the docklands, which is a developing part of the city on the waterfront.

One thing I noticed is that there is Chinese writing all over the city. (They have a very large Asian population.) It made me feel as though I was somewhere in Asia, not in beautiful Australia. The trams also make it seem like you could possibly be in San Francisco. It’s a huge combination of all the best cities in the world.

Evil tram inspector behind Madeline.
I’m getting ahead of myself. We took the tram to the city, which is the craziest system. We bought tickets for the tram, thankfully, because we were asked to show them to the tram inspector. (Think of a train conductor, only power hungry.)

Not only did we buy the wrong tickets, but we also had to buy new ones. The guy was a total jerk about the whole thing. He kept saying he was doing us a favor. If that were true you would’ve let us off with a warning, and not have forced us to spend another $10. The whole ordeal put a real damper on the beginning of the day, but once we got to the city things really picked up.

The sun came out which made the tower view really cool. It’s like the Sear’s Tower back in Chicago, only without the hour long wait and like half the price. (It could be the only thing cheaper in AUS.) It was so worth it; we could see all of Melbourne. We weren’t up there super long, but we did go out in a fenced area where we could have could the wind and everything. (Beat that Chi-town!)

I did America proud. I actually went to the fenced and looked down. I wanted to die, but it was so worth it. It was also great practice for the Sydney Harbor Bridge climb I will be doing on the 27th. I still can’t believe I’m doing that. Well, when in Australia. (I really have to stop justifying things by that; I used the same logic when I ordered kangaroo.)

One thing you can’t see from the tower are the alley markets they have. You pretty much walk through an alley. It’s cooler than it sounds because there are murals and other graffiti tags. But you walk through the alleys and all of the sudden you’re in this place that resembles our malls. It reminds me of something from Harry Potter. I still don’t get how it works.

After seeing Melbourne from the air we went to the casino. We got carded; it was awesome. They had this Christmas themed light show inside. It was borderline creepy, but the lights were cool. We walked around the casino looking for the food court. (People aren’t joking when they say casinos are designed to trap you in with no sense of time or space.) On our search we found a Sex and the City slot machine thing; I’m not 100% sure what it was. I was going to gamble for the first time, but I didn’t have the right type of money. It was probably for the better. I can easily see myself having to call 1-800-GAMBLER.

We finally made it to the food court, which like everything else down under, was super expensive. We opted for a cheaper option like ‘Mackers’. Thankfully we found a Subway; it is beach season after all. I also didn’t want to make a meal out of ‘chips’.

That’s right I travel halfway across the world just to eat Subway. We got our food and found the perfect bench outside to people watch on. It was mostly business people who crossed our path; we were in the business part of the city. I still thought it was interesting to see how different Aussie and Americans are.

From left to right, emu, kangaroo, and crocodile.
Which brings me to fashion. I originally told Liana I thought we had similar styles, but after reevaluating the question at hand I realized that Aussies are way more stylish. They dress to impress everyday. Most people look amazing; it is a hipster nation. There are some kooky people out there, but every country has those weirdoes.

We ended our city experience at the Melbourne Market. It’s like the Taste of Chicago mixed with a flea market, only every Wednesday. That’s where I sampled kangaroo, emu, and croc. Well we’re coming up the beach, and I would much rather be out there living my Aussie dream than writing about it. (Finding time to blog is harder than I thought.)

Cheers, mate.

P.S. If anyone is wondering I never had really bad jet-lag like Liana’s parents said I would. Going back will be bad though. Still don’t want to think about leaving paradise.

Going to Liana's beach house

There is no wi-fi there so I won't be able to update the blog until I get back, but when I do I will be sure to add all my posts. I'm swimming in the Pacific today!

To meat or not to meat

From left to right, emu, kangaroo, and crocodile.
There really wasn't a question. When you have the chance to sample emu, kangaroo, crocodile you go for it. I ate the exotic dishes at the Melbourne (pronounced mel - burn) market. I know, being a vegetarian it is completely against my values, but I don't know when the next chance I'll get to eat it will be. I mean, its definitely authentic.

Looks delicious right. The emu reminded me of a sausage or a brat (if I had ever eaten those). The kangaroo had the same texture as meatloaf (or so I remember, I never really liked meatloaf). As for the crocodile, it was very similar to chicken. I'm sure that crocodile would've been my favorite if I hadn't eaten it cold. I ate the croc last. Honestly, I don't particularly miss meat. It has a chewy, gross texture. I'm still glad I tried it, but I don't plan on becoming a carnivore anytime soon.

Also had my first bit of alcohol today. Yummy sangria. I didn't even get carded! Which is kind of disappointing. Although when people see my ID they seem very confused. That's all for now.

Cheers, mate.

Going to Melbourne today

Deja Vu at Deluxe Bar.
Liana lives in the suburbs of Melbourne, so we are going in today by bus, but they call it the tram. Our plan includes shopping, walking around, and well... I'm not too sure of what else. But tonight we're going to go to Deja Vu to dance, which is funny because we have a Deja Vu comedy/dance club in Columbia. It will be the first time I can drink at a club. (We all got carded yesterday when we were buying out expensive alcohol; which I am still bitter about, if I am paying big bucks for alcohol it better be better than the stuff I drink at home!)

We decided to try making 'jelly' shots for tonight, raspberry lemonade actually. They sound yummy. It's strange, because we are all of legal age (by we I mean Maddie, Liana, Liana's friends, and myself) are going to drink at home before we go out in front of her parents. Which to me is strange; the only time I've ever drank in front of my family is when we are on vacation, family holidays, and the occasional wine at dinner. This should be interesting.

A wallaby, not to be mistaken for a kangaroo.
Yesterday is a bit fuzzy to me now. I didn't realize how tired I was until dinner, which was amazing. They had prepared a least four different kinds of meats (I tried the fish), salad, salsa stuff (which I assumed you ate plain), and this 'jelly' cream cheese stuff. Everything I ate was delicious. It was at dinner that I met Liana's dad, Rodi. Rodi, Brad (Liana's stepdad), Diane (Liana's mom), Madeline, Liana, and I talked about everything from American sports to Australia's deadliest creatures. (And Margaret, they compared owning a wallaby to owning a raccoon. Not only is it illegal, but they are vicious animals. And they are small kangaroos! Trust the Aussies.) We also had tea after dinner, which the Aussies had with milk. They looked at me like I was crazy when I said I wanted 'black' tea as they call it. They have such an interesting lingo in Australia.

Madeline and I where you return your 'trolley'.
carts = trolleys
flip-flops = thongs
thongs = g-strings
bogan = red neck
jelly = jello
ranger (pronounced rang - ar) = ginger (as in red head)
black tea = no milk in your tea

If I think of any other's I will be sure to add them.

Oh, I forgot to add that Maddie and I met Liana's grandmother yesterday. She looked so young I could've sworn she looked like Liana's aunt. We get to meet most of Liana's family on Christmas, so I'll try to get a picture of the whole gang. The Neri-Keighran family will be having more than 25 people at their house. Talk about a big Christmas. It will also be a very international Christmas; not only will there be Americans, but we will also be joined by a Brazilian and some Italians. This should be a delicious Christmas.

I also mentioned to at dinner that my parents are obsessed with marrying me off, and now all the adults are trying to marry me off to the eligible bachelors of Australia. (Don't worry mom, they are only trying to fix me up with the wealthy ones.) They have the greatest sense of humor. Rodi and Diane actually came into Liana's room as we were about to go to bed to show me a picture of John, bachelor number 1.

Buddy, Liana's black labrador.
Diane also joked about feeding me dog food with peanut butter when I told her I would eat just about anything with peanut butter on it. Of course I pointed out the fact that dog food actually has meat products in it, and being a vegetarian I couldn't eat it. Besides, I don't think Buddy wanted to share with me anyway.

Well, that's really all I have for now. I think I'm still a bit jet-lagged, so I imagine the writing style and flow of this blog wasn't great. I promise I will improve. If I think of anything I missed I'll be sure to include it in another blog post.

Cheers, mate.

Finally made it

Madeline and I finally made it to Australia. The flights totaled to 20 hours of flight time, but it is worth it. It is beautiful out. (Even though, the Aussies claim it's going to be the worst day we'll have.) As amazing as the country is I had to shower before I could explore the place.

Let me tell you, I have never wanted a shower more in my life. Now I feel refreshed, and ready to go. There isn't much I can say about the country. But the flights were interesting.

The flight from St. Louis to Chicago was nice. It was barely an hour if that.

Then I met my family for my layover in Chicago. I only saw my brothers for a moment; the dummies parked in a kiss and ride zone. But it was great to see everyone.

Today, Maddie, Liana, and I went shopping at the mall, toured here hometown, saw her high school, and bought alcohol. Which might I say is super expensive! $30 for a fifth of Smirnoff! (For those of you who don't know how much it is in America it's around $15.) I also brought an American past time game with me. That's right I brought the gift of beer pong down under. I can't wait to teach the Aussies (and Madeline) all the fun drinking games I've learned over the past year.

Tonight, we're having fish for dinner. Yes, I will be eating fish in Australia. I also plan to sample other meats native to the nation. I still haven't seen a kangaroo, but I'm not giving up hope. Sorry for all the random thoughts, but I'm starting to feel the effects of jetlag, but shhhh... Don't tell the Neri's. I refuse to let them know how jetlagged I truly am.

Cheers, mate.

Tomorrow is the big day

I just woke up from one of the best slumbers I have ever had. Well, the best I can remember anyway, even if it was the on the Baum's couch. I don't know if it was the couch or the fact that my travel companion and I had a crazy night. By crazy night I mean, Madeline and I went to Target to get some last minute essentials like a travel pillow and disposable tooth brushes. Then we went to Barnes and Noble to find a book for the plan. I really want to read The Vow. I think it's a book at least. Well, we got there when the store was closing and there were over 100 books with that title, so we struck out there. Next, we went to Culvers, Maddie's work, and talked to the owners for a bit; nice people, even if they do hate people from Illinois. Finally, we came home to relax and ended up watching Danny Devito in Deck the Halls, which I found to be a very funny movie. But then again, I love anything Danny Devito does.

It's strange to believe that even though I leave tomorrow it's still more than 24 hours away. (My flight to Chicago leaves at 3 or 4 something...) After we depart from LAX, Madeline and I will still have to wait 18 hours to get to Melbourne. We leave on our Sunday, but we won't get there until their Tuesday! I know it's crazy. On the plus side we get there at 9:00 AM so we won't waste anytime sleeping; I hope.

At least I will have something to do or the flight there. My parents met at lady who graduated from Mizzou at the Illinois State Parents Weekend. They talked about me (surprise, surprise) and it came up that I should contact her for a possible internship. Well, I did; now I need to make a resume and email it to a different guy in the company. If all goes well I will hopefully get the internship, and it would be amazing if the internship was a paid internship that could go towards me getting instate tuition.

Well, we've got a busy day ahead of us.

Cheers, mate.

Last day in Columbia

That's right. The day has finally come. I will be making the trip from Columbia, MO to St. Louis either with Madeline or Sarosh. This is insane. I swear I won't be able to to sleep for the next two nights! I am so excited, but it's still sad saying goodbye to everyone. I said goodbye to Stevee today, and almost cried. I said almost. Well I have to finish some lat minute packing.

Cheers, mate.

Finals are done, time to relax

Ha! I wish. Just when, I think I'm done I realize I have to pack a whole months worth of clothes in one suitcase. Someone help me! I think I got a good system going. I just hope I'm not forgetting anything...

Cheers, mate.

Correction, now it's 3 days left

Oooops. Well, we all make mistakes right? I mean with finals and finish all the last minute details of preparing for a vacation, who would wouldn't lose track of the days? For the record I now have three days left in the states, and only one final stands in my way.

It's funny, it seems like everywhere I go I am reminded of Australia. As if I needed a reminder. One of the presentations for my Cross Culture Journalism class talked about Australian beef; I know interesting right? Not! (The best part of the whole presentation was the fact that they said Australia, the rest of it was about China... Long story, and trust me it's not worth telling.) But what really excited me was the lady who waxed me today also waxing a lady from Melbourne, now if you haven't been keeping up with the game plan that's the first stop on my adventure. Talk about a coincidence.

Well, as much as I would love to sit here and talk about Australia I have a final to study for. Wish me luck.

Cheers, mate.

9 days

Happy Birthday Pete. I Love You.

9 days until Australia.

Cheers, Mate.

10 days

It seems like my mind has been so preoccupied with the concerns of preparing for my trip. However, even with finals, packing, and everything else going on there is no way I could forget my best friend's birthday. Happy Birthday Katie Kats! Cool Geeks gopher hunting since 2003.

Great day for Australia

I cannot wait for my trip. Especially now that I know all my tickets are e-tickets, and the only thing I absolutely need is my passport. Also, I ran into the mailman and he finally gave me my package which the mailbox has been holding hostage for the last week. (But really it was all my roommates tried to open the lock, but the key kept getting stuck.)

The camera is now charging, and I'm getting ready to try it out tomorrow.

11 days

Cheers, mate.

12 days left

With only 12 days left, and three finals standing in between me and paradise I can't help but give it my all. The time to study is now. The time to relax will come soon enough.

Cheers, mate.

The swimsuit experiment

I once read an article about looking great and feeling great in your swimsuit. One of the tips the article gave was to wear your swimsuit around the house. The logic behind the whole idea was if you wear your swimsuit more often you'll be more comfortable when you actually hit the beach. I don't know if I believe this, but I'm willing to try anything. So if you see me don't be surprised if I'm half naked striking my best Heidi Klum pose. Haha.

Cheers, mate.

2 Weeks Notice

I nearly fell out of my chair when my countdown to Australia said that it was only two weeks away. I still can't seem to wrap my mind around the fact that I will be out of the country let alone that the trip is only days away!

I finally ordered my presents for Madeline and Liana. Normally I would write what I got, but there is a chance they'll see this. It looks like you'll have to wait for Christmas to know what I got them if you haven't already heard.

Well that all for now. Cheers, mate.

stressful times

Packing could be one of the most stressful things about an actual vacation. I haven't begun to pack yet, but I can just picture the stress that will come when I'm trying to pack all my summer clothes in one small suitcase. (Don't worry, mom. I'm taking your advice). Aside from packing I have a shopping list of things to do in order to prepare for my trip. They might seem trivial, but they are important.

I MUST:

1. ask about my student travel card.

2. find out if I have E-tickets. I also need to know if I need to bring any papers.

3. print out my Expedia ticket itinerary.

It's not the most interesting thing in the world to blog about, but it's what's going on in my life. And it will hopefully motivate me to figure all these things out. Well that's all for now.

Cheers, mate!

trip of a lifetime

When I was first asked to spend my winter break in Australia I could envision the trip I would never take. The idea that I would be leaving the country to send the holidays down under seemed like another one of my daydreams that would never come true. Even if I could somehow come up with the money, there was no way in hell my parents would let me miss family Christmas. When I asked my parents if I could go I was shocked that they would even consider the idea. The whole charade seemed like a cruel way my parents were toying with my emotions.

But then I found out that I had done the impossible. I had convinced my parents in four days to allow me to leave the country, and miss family Christmas. The news came as a shock, and even now I still can't believe that I'm going. To make things better I will traveling with my friend Madeline Baum. And this was all made possible because of our friend Liana Neri, who conveniently lives in Australia, and decided to study aboard so we could meet her.

And now with 17 days until my plan takes off for the Gold Coast. The plan is to spend Christmas with the Neri's in Melbourne, and then a few days later it's off to Sydney to bring in the New Year. And on New Year's Day the three amigos are of to Cairns (pronounced [ˈkeːnz]). Our plans include hitting up the pool/beach, climbing the Sydney Harbor Bridge, and possibly snorkeling and surfing.

While I can't wait for this trip to start. I can't imagine how I'm supposed to pack everything I'll need in one suitcase, but I'll have to try.

TIme to 'send it down south'. Cheers, mate!
